The yard sale has become an annual event--Our Spring fundraiser for C.A.R.E. [Covington Animal Rescue Effort]. This was our second one and it was fabulous. Fabulous, that is, if you filter out the 100 degree weather [107 heat index] that a few of the VERY dedicated battled for three days getting ready for it! If you've ever had a yard sale you know they are NOT fun to prepare. First of all we have to beg for donations and who likes to beg? Then we have to store the donations until time for the sale. I don't like going through my own junk much less someone else's! But there we were two days before the sale pulling all manner of "stuff' out of storage and setting up tables and trying to arrange things tastefully. After all, even in a yard sale presentation is everything! Maybe even more so at a yard sale!!!! We had everything from beautiful china to a commode. [Thank the Dear Lord that it sold before the wedding!] Plus, we had a crafts area and a bake sale [60 pans of rolls sold, thank you very much, along with the pies and cakes that members and friends brought!] AND an adoption day rolled into one huge event. The picture above tells you why we do it. Honey Girl. I love that dog. Every time I look at her I remember the starved, concave body, the look of defeat. Then gradually the faint gleam of hope in her eyes. And now the filled out, athletic strong body and the confidence that hugs and plenty of food and water are hers unequivocally.
We work very hard at fundraising. It takes a lot of cold hard cash for the vetting, the expected expenses and the unexpected. Shots, spays, neuters, heartworm tests and often treatments, plus all the extras--Health certificates and bordetellas if they travel, food, kennels, flea preventions, the list is endless. All for the love of dogs. But let me tell you--we get far more from them than they do from us. And anyone that doesn't get that, truly doesn't Get it is just not a whole person as far as I'm concerned and I feel sorry for them.
So this posts is to thank everyone that took the time to clear out a closet, to collect a few items no longer needed, to bake or help us in any way because we could NOT have done it without you. Seriously. And all the Honey Girls of the world thank you too with wags and licks, adoring eyes and loyalty like you wouldn't believe.
